A LETTER TO RIHANNA ABOUT HER SPIKED-OUT SHOULDERS

Dear Rihanna,

You have triumphed this year, this is clear. Sure, Lady Gaga exploded with all those No. 1 hits and leotards and that weird teacup. But you overcame and spoke courageously about an abusive relationship, released a new album cleverly titled Rated R, and somehow turned strips of toilet paper into a performance outfit that was actually reasonably supportive. Your love of spikes has not gone undocumented, but recently we've noticed your growing affinity for placing increasingly scary ones on your shoulders. Clearly you're an independent woman who needs neither the shoulders of others to lean on nor others leaning on your shoulders. But frankly, we're concerned, because one day a moth could fly in front of your face and you could whip your head to the side suddenly and get an earring stuck on those things. And then you could be walking around bleeding from the lobe, and okay, Gaga made that look fantastic at this year's Video Music Awards, but we'll still write you blogletters - no more spikes. You enjoy pantsless looks — why not try some fur or feathered garters? When it comes to fashion, safety first, please. This goes of course without mentioning that they look absolutely terrible.

design: SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS by KARL LAGERFELD

Here is a piece of work from the illustrious Karl Lagerfeld that I'm will certain will garner a lot of attention. Spongebob Squarepants is the latest subject of attraction for the fashion icon. The Spongebob figure was given a little Lagerfeld swag, customized with dark shades, a towering starched collar and of course the fingerless gloves and has already raised 1,000 euros for WWD at a recent fundraiser in Paris.

VIDEO | LAGERFELD AND TOM FORD INTERVIEW, TOGETHER!

Tom Ford sat down with Time to explain why his menswear line is so great. And he brought along one of his customers to back him up: Karl Lagerfeld. "It's made differently and ready-to-wear," Karl says. "This quality didn't [used to] exist. You had to fit 40 times before you had a suit. Something I hate is to be touched by strangers." But Karl loves how the arm holes in Tom's suits are cut close to the body so when you raise an arm, the arm "follows your will, but not the jacket." He adds jackets that do that are "for the garbage." Tom says he started his own line with menswear because he couldn't find anything to wear. "Tom is not a drag queen — he started with men's clothes because he wanted clothes for him," Karl emphasizes. And of course, Tom insists on flattering Karl, too. Watch the love on video below. If I was in this room, I would have DIED.

KARL LAGERFELD WISHES HE COULD BE A RAPPER

For the September issue of American Harper's Bazaar, some top designers were asked to live out their fantasies in a special editorial shoot.

Designers like Giorgio Armani, Alber Elbaz, and Roberto Cavalli chose to step into the roles of their silver screen icons. Karl Lagerfeld decided to become a rapper. Yes, you read correctly, a rapper.

In the issue, on newsstands now, the French designer donned a Billionaire Boys Club jacket, a pair of loose-fitting Phat Farm jeans, and a graphic Tee to emulate his favorite rap artists.

"Believe it or not, I love rap," he told the magazine.

CALUDIA SCHIFFER FOR CHANEL AUTUMN/WINTER '08 AD CAMPAIGN

Back in March I spotted Karl Lagerfeld, along with Claudia Schiffer and an entourage of others on 122nd St. in Harlem. I'd later find out that they were shooting the Fall/Winter 08-09 campaign for Chanel. I'd completely forgotten about it until I found myself thumbing through the new i-D Mag, with YSL's Stefano Pilato and Naomi Campbellon the cover, and there it was.

This is the second season in a row Claudia has fronted the Chanel advertising campaigns - that is after she was dropped back in 1996, after 5 years as the face of the French house when the heroin-chic look was at its peak. I'm so happy that the 37 year-old supermodel kept her position as the face of the brand even though her younger contemporaries, Coco Rocha and Masha Novoselova have fronted campaigned for Chanel’s Paris-London and Sport campaigns respectively. I love to see the old girls working.

KARL LAGERFELD TO LAUNCH UNISEX FRAGRANCE TRIO

Karl Lagerfeld is launching a new fragrance trio- Kapsule. The unisex scents, in bottles inspired by the designer's love of geometry, will be launched at the end of October in France and will hit Germany, travel retail and the U.S. in November. Industry sources estimate Kapsule will generate $48 million in retail sales globally in its first seven months on counter.

Karl said the scents are genderless because "there is no gender in perfumes anymore."

KARL LAGERFELD TO DESIGN HOMES ON 'FASHION ISLAND' IN DUBAI

Wouldn't it be amazing if there was a paradise island where fashionistas could gather and exude fabulousness together? Where famous designers could throw amazing parties and put on fashion shows exclusively for the island's residents, who live in couture villas with private beaches just steps from the best boutiques in the world? It sounds too good to be true, but it's not: Isla Moda is that fashion paradise. It's under construction in Dubai, natch, and Karl Lagerfeld is the first fashion designer to sign on to design a few "limited edition" homes there. He says in a press release:

"Dubai is a fashion bud on the verge of blossoming into the next fashion hub of the world … Isla Moda has tremendous potential to be the style icon of the future and I intend on driving the island to high style stardom," he added.

That "tremendous potential" includes a "style concierge" available to residents of Isla Moda for clothes, fragrances, and makeovers (there's also a design one to help you with your home-furnishing and decorating needs). If you can't afford one of Lagerfeld's houses, Isla Moda will also include a hotel with 250 rooms and serviced apartments. And here we thought retiring in California sounded like a nice idea.

Dubai Infinity Holdings is developing the project in line with its "mandate to fulfill unmet market needs." We don't know about you, but we sure can't think of an unmet market need that needed more fulfilling.

N.E.R.D Concert/Release Party

N.E.R.D. got it rockin last night in an exclusive concert/ record release party at the Roosevelt Hotel in LA. The event was sponsored by Zune, in conjunction with their new album Seeing Sounds.

While Nicole Richie snuck past the press line to catch up with fellow musician Chad Hugo, Pharrell was more than happy to talk about his current business ventures. “I don’t have an empire, but I’m humbly working towards building something,” the music whiz kid said of his own foray into fashion, music and production.

Other guests included Snoop Dogg and DJ Samantha Ronson on the 1's and 2's.

For the fashion world, famed designer Karl Lagerfeld has always been perceived as sort of an enigma. For those of you not familiar, he has collaborated with a variety of different fashion houses, most notably Chanel but also ChloƩ and Fendi. He owns several labels, which he launched in the early 1980s, in various industries including perfume and clothing. He has also played a role in equipping leading artists.

In an attempt to understand a man that has such a huge impact on fashion, filmmaker Rodolphe Marconi set out to create the Lagerfeld Confidential, a film which features an in-depth look into Lagerfeld's life.
